Trash

Beat Your Opponent to a Full Layout of Ten. Free Online

Play Trash, the card game also called Garbage, free online in your browser, against the computer or at a table with a friend, with no download or account needed.

Trash, or Garbage if that is what your family called it, is the card game you can teach a six-year-old in one hand and still enjoy at forty. Ten face-down cards in front of you, one slot for each value from Ace to Ten. Draw a card, drop it in its slot, flip the card that was there, and keep the chain going until you hit something that will not fit. First player to fill the whole row wins the round. That is all of it, and it is more fun than it has any right to be.

This version puts you head to head against a computer player with a name and a face, racing to fill its own row across the table, or against a friend at a table of your own. Play a single quick round, a five-round match, or the full nine-round game where every round you win takes a card off your layout until you are down to two. It is free here at CardAndPuzzle.com, plays in your browser with no download or sign-up, and saves your match on your device.

How Do You Play Trash?

The rules of Trash take about a minute to learn:

  • The Deal: You and your opponent each get ten cards face down in two rows of five. Reading left to right, the slots want Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5 on the top row and 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 on the bottom. The rest of the deck is the draw pile.
  • Draw or Take: On your turn, draw the top card of the deck, or take the top card of the trash pile if it fits one of your open slots.
  • Place and Flip: Put the card face up in its slot and pick up the face-down card that was there. If that card fits somewhere too, place it and keep going. One good draw can fill half your row.
  • Jacks Are Wild: A Jack goes into any face-down slot. Draw that slot's real card later and you can swap it in, which sends the Jack back to your hand to fill another gap.
  • Queens and Kings End Your Turn: They have no slot. So does any card whose slot is already filled. Put it on the trash pile and the turn passes to your opponent.
  • Winning the Round: The moment every slot in your layout is face up, the round is yours. Win a round and your next layout is one card smaller.

How Long Is a Match of Trash?

Before every fresh deal you choose how far the match runs. The classic game shrinks your layout by one card every time you win a round, so the finish line gets closer as you go:

MatchRounds to winLayoutGood for
Quick1Ten cardsA two-minute break.
Half5Ten down to sixA proper match without the long tail.
Full9Ten down to twoThe classic game, ending in a frantic two-card round.

Only the round winner's layout shrinks, so your opponent might still be working on eight cards while you are down to five. Each round is scored for the site's XP system, and the longer the match, the more XP a win is worth.

Can You Play Trash with a Friend?

Yes. Trash is a two-player race, so a table has exactly two seats:

  • Start a Table: Choose Play with friends, pick the match length, and the game gives you a six-character code and a link. Share it however you like.
  • Turns Stay Moving: Each turn has a 30-second timer. If time runs out, your seat plays for you so nobody is left waiting.
  • Reconnect: Lose your connection and your seat is held for a minute. Come back and you pick up exactly where you left off.
  • Joining Is Easy: Tap the link, or open the game and type the code under Join with a code. Either one takes you straight to the table.

Who Are You Playing Against?

  • A Named Regular: Against the computer, your opponent is one of sixteen regulars, Nova, Sam, Atlas, Ruby, Sage, Max, Luna, Felix, Echo, Juno, Remy, Iris, Bo, Mia, Cleo or Leo, each with a face and a short bio. A different one sits down for each match.
  • Fair and Fast: Trash is a race of luck, so the computer plays by exactly the same rules you do and sees only the cards it turns over. It takes a moment to think and plays its chain of cards at a pace you can follow.
  • Table Talk: The regulars react with short remarks when a round goes its way or yours. If you would rather play in silence, it switches off in the settings.

What Are the Best Trash Strategies?

Trash is mostly luck, which is exactly why it is so relaxing, but a few habits win more rounds:

  • Check the Trash Pile First: The top card of the trash pile is the one card you can see before you commit. If it fits, take it. A known card beats a blind draw every time.
  • Watch What Your Opponent Discards: The card your opponent just threw away is the card you get to take next turn. If it drops a 7 and your 7 slot is empty, that is a free placement waiting for you.
  • Use Jacks Late: A Jack fills any slot, so drop it where the odds are worst: the slot whose card has already been buried in the trash pile, or the last empty gap in a nearly finished row. A Jack that gets swapped out comes back to you, so it is never wasted.
  • Count What Is Gone: There are four of each value. If you have seen three 4s go by and your 4 slot is still empty, a Jack is the realistic answer for that slot.
  • Small Layouts Turn Fast: In the last rounds of a full match, one draw can win the round. Take the trash card whenever it fits and never pass up a Jack.

Why Play Trash Here?

  • The Real Rules: Ten slots, wild Jacks, dead Queens and Kings, take from the trash or draw from the deck, and a layout that shrinks as you win, the same game families have played for generations.
  • Three Match Lengths: A single round, five rounds or the full nine, chosen before every deal.
  • Never Stuck: The game glows the piles you can use and the slots a card can go in, so you always see your options, and an unlimited hint shows the play if you want it.
  • An Opponent with a Face: You are racing a named regular across the table rather than a faceless dealer, or a friend at a table of your own.
  • Great for Kids and Families: Number matching, turn-taking, nothing to memorise. A four-step how-to-play card covers everything the first time you sit down.
  • Free in Your Browser: No download, no app store, no account needed. It works the moment the page loads, on any device, and it is in the free Card & Puzzle app too.
  • Picks Up Where You Left Off: Your match in progress and your lifetime stats, including rounds won, save automatically on your device, and on every device once you sign in.

Ten Cards Face Down

Every round of Trash starts with the same tidy secret: two rows of five cards you know nothing about. Then you draw a 3, flip the 3 slot, find an Ace, flip the Ace slot, find a 9, and suddenly half your row is showing and your opponent has not moved. The best rounds are the ones where a single draw runs the whole table. The worst are the ones where you need a 6, your opponent needs a 6, and the trash pile is full of Kings. Either way it is over in two minutes and you will want another. Deal one and see how your luck is running.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play the Trash card game?

Each player gets ten face-down cards in two rows of five, one slot for each value from Ace to Ten. On your turn, draw a card from the deck or take the top card of the trash pile. If it fits an unfilled slot, put it there face up and pick up the card that was in that slot, then keep going with that card. When you draw or flip a card you cannot place, it goes on the trash pile and your turn ends. The first player to fill all ten slots wins the round.

What are the wild cards in Trash?

Jacks are wild. A Jack can go into any face-down slot. If you later draw the card that slot really wanted, you can swap it in and the Jack pops back into your hand to be used somewhere else. Queens and Kings cannot be placed anywhere. Drawing one ends your turn.

Is Trash the same game as Garbage?

Yes. Trash, Garbage and Ten Card Trash are all names for the same game: fill a row of face-down cards with Ace through Ten in order before the other player does. The pile you discard onto is where the game gets its name.

How do you win a game of Trash?

Complete your layout before your opponent to win the round. Each round you win takes one card off your layout, so a full match runs from ten cards down to two, nine rounds in all. You can also choose a shorter match: a quick match is a single ten-card round and a half match runs five rounds, from ten cards down to six.

Can I take a card from the trash pile?

Yes, if it fits. On your turn you can pick up the top card of the trash pile instead of drawing from the deck, as long as it goes into one of your open slots. If it does not fit anywhere, draw from the deck instead.

How long does a game of Trash take?

A single round takes a couple of minutes, so a quick match is done in about two minutes, a half match in ten, and a full nine-round match in fifteen to twenty. Your match is saved on your device, so you can leave and come back.

Is Trash a good card game for kids?

Yes. Trash is one of the easiest card games to learn because the rules fit in a sentence: put each card in its numbered slot. It teaches number recognition and turn-taking, and every placement is obvious, so a young player never gets stuck. Our version highlights where a card can go and has an unlimited hint button.

Can I play Trash with a friend?

Yes. Trash is a two-player game, so a table has two seats: you and one friend. Choose Play with friends, start a table, and share the six-character code or the link. Each turn has a 30-second timer so the match keeps moving, and if you drop out you have a minute to reconnect to your seat.

Is Trash free to play online?

Yes. Trash on CardAndPuzzle.com is completely free and runs in your browser on phones, tablets and computers. There is nothing to download and no account needed. It is also in the free Card & Puzzle app for iOS and Android. Your match in progress and your stats are saved on your device, and if you sign in they are kept on every device.

Who am I playing against in Trash, and is it fair?

Against the computer, your opponent is one of the Card & Puzzle regulars: sixteen named computer players, each with a style of their own. They are always marked, so you always know who is a person, and they draw from the same deck by the same rules you do. At a table with a friend, the server shuffles and deals every round, and neither of you can see the other's face-down cards.

Is Trash live, or do we take turns?

Live, at the same time. Two players sit at a table and play from the first round to the last, and if one of you drops out the computer finishes the seat. Start a table or Join with a code, in your browser or in the app, no sign-in needed. Taking turns over days is the way Yatzy works.

Is there a daily Trash deal?

Yes. Every day at midnight Pacific time, Trash gets one new deal that everyone plays. Your first try is the one that counts, and replays are practice. The board ranks by fastest win, and you can see where you stand against the people you follow, your league of twenty players at your level, and everyone. The Card & Puzzle regulars, sixteen computer players who are always marked, fill any empty league seats. Play today's deal right here, in the Card & Puzzle app, or from Daily, and see the standings on the Trash leaderboard.
