What Are Blank Dominoes Actually For?

Three things, in my experience:

Replacement tiles. Every well-loved domino set eventually loses a tile — usually discovered mid-deal, usually the exact double someone needs. Cut out a blank, copy the pips from the tile layout of your set (a double-12 set has one of every pairing from 0-0 to 12-12), and the game goes on tonight instead of after a replacement set ships. This is the case blanks are genuinely better for than a pre-printed sheet: you need one specific tile, not 91.

Kids’ crafts and classroom games. Blank tiles are a genuinely versatile teaching material. Teachers use them for matching games — pair a math problem on one half with its answer on another tile, sight words with pictures, fractions with decimals — and the domino format means the kids build chains instead of just flipping flashcards. For younger kids, decorating a personal set of dominoes with markers and stickers is the craft and the game in one.

Drawing your own full set. Cheaper than buying one, and a surprisingly good rainy-afternoon project — though if you just want a playable set, the pre-printed domino set saves you drawing 500-odd pips by hand. The math for doing it yourself is below.

How Many Pages Do I Need for a Full Set?

At 28 tiles per page:

• Double-6 set — 28 tiles — exactly 1 page.
• Double-9 set — 55 tiles — 2 pages (one copy of the download, with a spare left over).
• Double-12 set — 91 tiles — 4 pages, the standard set for Mexican Train.

For a double-12 set, print the two-page download twice: 112 tiles, the full 91 plus plenty of spares for the ones that end up behind the couch later. A double-n set contains every unordered pairing of 0 through n, doubles included, so the cleanest way to fill in a set is to work systematically: all the blanks (0-0 up to 0-12), then all the remaining 1s (1-1 up to 1-12), and so on up to the 12-12.

Pips above six don’t fit a die face, so use the layout real high-value sets use — two outer columns of pips with a centre column between them: 7 is 3-1-3, 8 is 3-2-3, 9 is 3-3-3, then 10 is 4-2-4, 11 is 4-3-4 and 12 is a 4-4-4 grid.

Printing and Assembly Tips

Use cardstock. This is the one tip that matters. Regular paper dominoes curl, tear, and — the real problem — are transparent enough to read from the back. 65 lb or 110 lb cardstock cuts cleanly, shuffles reasonably, and hides the pips. The PDF includes cardstock guidance too.

Beyond that: cut along the printed borders with scissors or a paper trimmer (straight cuts are what make the tiles feel like a real set), and use a dark marker for pips so they’re readable at arm’s length across a table. If the set is destined for a classroom, laminating after you’ve drawn the pips roughly triples its life expectancy.
